The First XV travelled to Llangwm last Saturday in search of a win , which would secure the Palmer Cup. The match turned out to be really entertaining tussle, with the visitors dominating the first half scoring twenty six points to Llangwm’s solitary converted try. The home side then mounted a concerted effort throughout the second half that saw the visitors run out of steam, the home side dominate and score more well deserved tries to get to twenty one points. However, despite more late pressure the home side just fell short, leaving their very relieved visitors, who had had to defend resolutely for the final minutes, in order to secure their 21-26 win, which allowed them to claim the Palmer Cup for this season.
The First XV entertain Aberaeron this Saturday hoping to reverse the heavy loss to them earlier in the season, KO 2.30pm. The visitors are also due to travel here on Friday February 23 to play the Pembs KO Cup semi-final, KO 7pm.
The Youth were at home to Llangwm in the first round of the Pembs KO Youth Cup competition. Pembroke were without a few key personnel, whilst the young Llangwm side were keen to cause an upset. The whole game was played at a high tempo, with both sides willing to move the ball. The home side however dominated throughout, scoring ten tries and three conversions to win 56-3 against a plucky Llangwm outfit that persevered and defended resolutely. The Youth now move into the Cup semi final, with the draw being made in the weeks ahead; they are due to travel to take on Narberth away this coming Saturday.
The Panthers return to action this weekend when they travel to Swansea to take on the West Swansea Hawks, with whom they have enjoyed some tough tussles in recent seasons. Skipper Izzy Dufresnoy says the women are very keen to start the second half of the season with a win.
Everyone at the club was delighted to hear that Megan Cole had been selected in the Scarlets U18s women’s squad that played against the Dragons last Sunday, reports confirm she acquitted herself really well. Bowyn Clarke too has achieved his goal of being chosen at scrum half in the Scarlets U18s squad for the upcoming regional matches and everyone wishes him every success.
Very sadly the club said a solemn goodbye to another ex-player last week, when after a long illness Anthony Hodge passed away at home. Tony was an outstanding schoolboy athlete, cricketer and rugby player, who after training in Cardiff College of Education as a teacher, excelled in the backrow for Bridgend and Penarth over many seasons in the 70s and 80s. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his wife Christine, his family and close friends. The funeral is on January 25th, 10.45am at Narberth Crematorium, followed by the wake at our club.
