Tribute to club legend Eifion Powell

Eifion passed peacefully at Glangwili Hospital on Wednesday November 8, aged 87 years, in the presence of close family. “Pow” as he was known to all at the club, many close friends, people associated with both Pembroke rugby and cricket clubs and the many friends from the worlds of teaching, cricket and rugby was a true club legend, who will always be remembered for his total loyalty, hard work and dedication as a player, coach, committeeman, secretary and ardent supporter. Most especially he will always be remembered as the “clerk of works” and driving force, who galvanized a large group of volunteers to get the rugby stand built, some forty or more years ago.

In recent years, since the loss of his dear wife Margaret, who in her own right was a hugely respected figure and driving force on the Ladies Committee for over 50+ years at the rugby club, less was seen of Eifion on match days, but he still retained a deep interest in the club’s fortunes, watching games from his bedroom window. When committee and friends visited he would always be willing to give his opinions on the strengths, weaknesses and standards of play witnessed at home games, whilst always engaging in conversation on the sport he watched avidly on TV at home.

As a player of both sports he always applied himself fully and performed to the highest possible standards that he was capable of; Rev Norman Gilbert (Pembroke RFC ex-player) and his son Geoff at the funeral service reflected on his meticulous planning abilities, sporting accomplishments and most notable experiences as a rugby and cricket player, and rugby coach at the club. Many club members and ex-players assembled in the rugby club stand for a minutes silence prior to his interment at St Michael’s cemetery when he was reunited with his beloved wife.

RIP Eifion. The thoughts of everyone associated with both clubs are with his children, close family and friends.
