The Youth entertained a strong Carmarthen Athletic squad in a friendly last Friday evening. The whole game was played at a high tempo, with both sides showing their full array of skills. Both sides mounted regular concerted attacks and scored some well deserved tries, despite equally strong defensive work. After a very exciting and entertaining match, the visitors eventually ran out 20-21 winners.
The young First XV travelled to LLanybydder for their opening League game, missing a few key players. The visitors had very little knowledge of the home side’s capabilities, having not played them for many years. The visitors started very strongly and quickly asserted themselves, scoring freely against a disorganised defence to lead 0-45 at the break, thanks to some excellent interplay between their industrious forwards and hard running backs. Pembroke made changes at half time and this seemed to disrupt their flow in the third quarter, but they settled and continued dominate the fourth quarter scoring freely. The home side managed one converted try, but the visitors eventually ran away with a 7-74 win to the delight of their coaching group and travelling support. No 10 Luke Alderwick scored 39 pts, tries from forwards Walters and Davies, and backs Griffiths, Brown and Stanford, whilst youth product Sam Elliott made his first appearance in the pack; Pembroke flanker Rhodri Walters was nominated Man of the Match.
The First XV take on Haverfordwest at home this Saturday KO 2.30pm, sponsored by ALTRAD and THE OLD KINGS ARMS HOTEL; the Youth are also home against Llangwm KO 2pm. The Junior section are getting into action in the weeks ahead and all age groups are very keen to get their seasons underway.
The WRU National competition fixtures are now out, the First XV will play Trimsaran home Sept 23 in the Div 3 Cup, the Panthers are to play Wrexham away Oct 8 in the Bowl. The First XV have been drawn against Crymych at home in Rd 2 of the Pembs KO Cup to be played later this autumn.
Congratulations to the 150+ Monthly draw winners for August, Alex Wiles (£100), Mark Jones (£75) and Jim Jeffcote (£50). Meanwhile, the annual weekly Turkey Trots started last Friday, tickets are available in a number of Pembroke pubs and the club.
Everyone at the club sends their sincerest best wishes for a speedy recovery to both John Parsons and Jeff Teague following their recent, respective operations. Equally, everyone congratulates the Cricket club’s Jack Harries on completing last weekend’s gruelling IRONMAN challenge and the many Juniors, who ran in their IRONKIDS events.
