The First XV travelled to Furnace for their first pre-season friendly last Saturday in challenging, windy, wet weather. The new tackle rules were strictly applied by the referee, who carded a number of players on both sides in both halves, as they players adapted. The game was a very entertaining and competitive affair, with Pembroke leading 13-7 at the break playing with a strong wind. Furnace took their chance and came back strongly second half when Pembroke had multiple players in the bin. However, the visitors proved very resilient and eventually ran out worthy winners by 20-17, despite a very late score from the home side. This Saturday the First XV will be playing Tumble at home, KO 2.30pm, in their second pre-season match prior to taking on Llangwm next Wednesday evening KO 7pm, in the first round of the Pembs KO Cup.
The Panthers, Youth and Junior age groups have all returned to training and are eagerly looking forward to their new campaigns. Tomorrow evening the Youth are hosting their second BBQ at Cresswell Quay from 5.30pm as they continue their fundraising for an end of year tour; they are hoping for a lot of support. Last weekend the U12s (in pic attached) played Rhiwbina RFC at the Arms Park, a great experience for these youngsters.
Last week the club was delighted to host Tim Tunnicliffe, who is completing another part of his GREAT RUGGER RUN aimed at raising funds for the DODDIE WEIR FOUNDATION. Charlie visited the club and was presented with a donation and club tie by President Dilwyn Williams (see pic); he posted a video of his visit on Facebook and more information about his efforts can be found on line.
In the last few weeks, Nia Matthews (daughter if Ieuan, Club Assistant Secretary) has travelled with and been competing for the Great Britain Octopush squad in Australia in the World Championships. Everyone wishes her and her squad every success and eagerly awaits the outcome in the days ahead.
Everyone at the club wishes Gareth Nicholas (son of Keith ex-club Secretary and Treasurer, and Karen) and his family happiness and success after their move to live in Perth, Australia. The Wales warm up games culminate this weekend in Cardiff with the final fixture against the current World Champions South Africa. After two good showings against England, this much changed squad will no doubt be severely tested and we will get a measure of their potential.
