Last Saturday the First XV were in action away at Fall Bay RFC (Gower) in the first round of the WRU National Division 4 Cup. Their opponents were Fall Bay, who were formed in 1994 and have been a WRU League side since 1995; currently they have thriving Youth, girls and junior sections. Pembroke had never played against Fall Bay previously and players, coaches and supporters received a very warm welcome and excellent hospitality. A large crowd had turned out to witness the encounter, which literally was a game of two halves, due to the very strong wind blowing from end to end.
The game turned into a try fest with the visitors outscoring their hosts by four tries to two first half and the home side turning the tables scoring four to the visitor’s one second half. Pembroke played with the wind first half and their determination was rewarded with a 10-27 lead at the break; but this could have been even greater if they could have finished some very good movements and been more committed in their defensive work. The home side used the wind well, created pressure and executed some well constructed phases of play to get back into the match and gain a narrow lead with fifteen minutes left. The home side were given a yellow card and Pembroke came back strongly during this final period and pressurised the home line with multiple thrusts, but simple mistakes prevented them from scoring, leaving their hosts to win by the small margin of 36-32, in what had been an enthralling and thoroughly entertaining Cup tie.
The Panthers played Tondu Titans away last weekend in a League match; the visitors played really well establishing a 5-36 lead, but the game was abandoned after 49 minutes due to horrendous weather conditions.
The Youth were not in action, but they are due to play Narberth at home this weekend KO 2.30pm.
A large number of junior age groups were active; there was an excellent win for the U14s in Aberystwyth, the U15s lost at home to a very mature Furnace side, whilst the u11, 7 and 8 all played very well in their matches.
Fixtures next weekend include, First XV Narberth Athletic away KO 2.30pm, Panthers play Morriston away on Sunday 13th, KO 2.30pm and the juniors have matrix fixtures for all age groups.
The Ladies Committee are holding a HALLOWEEN MARKET at the clubhouse on Sunday October 27, between the hours of 11am and 5pm. Everyone is invited to come along to see what’s on offer from a wide range of stalls and there will be the usual warm welcome and hospitality on offer for all visitors. Tomorrow Thursday, the club’s weekly coffee morning is due to be visited by a wide range of agencies that are part of the Pembs Health and Well Being Roadshow programme. All the regulars and anyone else who would like to attend will be given access to opportunities for health checks, discussions about all aspects of maintaining good physical, mental and social health, and a very convivial morning of activities, alongside the usual hospitality provided by officers and volunteers from the club.
